Penguins are the oldest type of bird...they have been around for 50 million years.
so where did the name 'penguin' come from??
The Great Auk (pictured below) was originally given the name 'penguin'. it was a flightless bird, black and white in colour and very large in size. it was native to the north atlantic ocean. When the southern oceans were explored by adventurers, they saw birds which rseambled these and called them 'penguins' too!
the GreatAuk has been extinct scince 1844........
